GRANDPA’S TREASURE TRAIL WINS OLYMPUS 72 HOUR FILMMAKER SHOWDOWN AT THE WORLD SKI & SNOWBOARD FESTIVAL!
April 16, 2015 – Last night at the World Ski & Snowboard Festival (WSSF) in Whistler, BC, Ben Giesbrecht, Jordan Ettinger and Charles Nasby won the 14th installment of the signature OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown with their film, Grandpa’s Treasure Trail.
Giesbrecht and his team had no plan for their film before receiving the prop but once they saw the green spray bottle the whole story came together. The plot centred around a young man receiving a package from his grandfather who had recently passed away. The package included a pot of dirt, the spray bottle and a journal which included a map to buried treasure. After an unsuccessful first attempt to follow the map to the treasure’s location, the grandson returns home and uses the spray bottle to water the pot of dirt. Eventually a beautiful yellow daffodil emerges from the soil and the grandson realizes it was a clue to the treasure’s actual location.
Giesbrecht and his team took home the grand prize of over $10,000 in cash and prizing for being named Best In Show by the judges at the event. They also earned an additional $5,000 for using all Olympus equipment while shooting their film. To top it all off, the team won the People’s Choice Award as voted by the sold out audience that night, which earned them an additional $5,000 in prizing.

The creative playing field is leveled at Whistler’s annual OLYMPUS 72hr Filmmaker Showdown. Post-production trickery, exotic locations, superstar talent and big budget advantages are made irrelevant when filmmakers are tasked to shoot, edit and produce a 3-5 minute short film within 100km radius of Whistler over the course of 72 hours. Relying purely on originality, craft, speed and endurance, the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown distills the art of film-making into its purest form – taking creative vision from concept to reality in record time in order for it to be enjoyed on the big screen by an audience of 1500+.
One winner, Best of Show, will be chosen by an expert panel of judges to reap the rewards this exposure will result in. Best of Show will also win over $10,000 in prizing.
BACK FOR THE 4th YEAR! OPPORTUNITY TO WIN AN EXTRA $5,000 FROM OLYMPUS
Olympus is offering an additional $5,000 bonus prize if the Best of Show film is shot exclusively with Olympus gear. Olympus will also offer the first 25 teams that express an interest the opportunity to borrow some of their top of the line cameras and lenses.
