Starting a bold new chapter, L D R U is rolling out four beat-driven “warm-up” tracks leading to his new song, ‘The Excuse’. The “warm-up” tracks will be leaked out over eight weeks which Drew Carmody says “pays homage to the OG fans who were there from the start.”
Newly signed to Warner Music Australia, L D R U’s opening blitz of music sets the stage for ‘The Excuse’. Featuring the unmistakable vocals of Harry O’Brien from Pacific Avenue, the single cements Drew’s talent for drawing the best out of one-of-a-kind vocalists. Building from jangly indie-pop to a propulsive, psychedelic swirl of electronics, ‘The Excuse’ showcases the evolution of Drew’s artistry since his last release.
L D R U’s four “warm-up” tracks bring a new injection of energy to the electronic dance world. The fizzing, club-ready ‘Be There’ came together in just a few hours as Drew was feeling a fresh surge of creativity and excitement. ‘Let You Go’, written during an earlier “dark and melancholy time”, starts delicately and builds to cathartic highs, punctuated by a catchy vocal sample. ‘Basecamp’ and ‘Ride Through’ complete the “warm-up” phase with Drew’s distinctive drums and inventive drops at front and centre.
The Excuse’ came to life after a friend introduced Drew to multi-instrumentalist and TikTok comedy sensation Tom Cardy. Getting together for an anything-goes studio session, Tom and Drew wrote the lyrics and melodies to ‘The Excuse’ in a rush of inspiration.
With Pacific’s Avenue Harry O’Brien on vocals, Tom jumping between drums and other percussion, and Drew’s good friend Taras helping out on piano and vocals, the song is a collaboration in the truest sense. Entering the session with a head fog referenced in the song’s opening lyric, Drew emerged with a thrilling new sound.
After Drew’s side project Carmada folded, the producer, who calls Sydney’s Northern Beaches home, kept writing music as a daily outlet, making no grand plans to share it. With a moment to exhale and take stock he gradually found his way back to L D R U.
The L D R U that fans know and love first emerged when Drew uploaded a breezy, trap-inflected tune titled ‘The Tropics’ to his SoundCloud in 2013. ‘The Tropics’ fused his pop sensibility with the razor-sharp electronic production skills he’d taught himself while recovering from an on-the-job accident as a build.
The single quickly caught the attention of tastemaking label Future Classic, home to artists such as Flume, Ta-ku and Chet Faker, who picked up ‘The Tropics’ for an official release and tapped Drew to remix Flume’s ‘Insane’, featuring Moon Holiday. “That was the first time I ever worked with vocals on a track,” he recalls.
‘The Tropics’ lit the fuse on an incredible run. Drew’s breakthrough hit, ‘Keeping Score’ (featuring Paige IV), went Triple Platinum as the highest-selling Australian single of 2016, scored three ARIA nominations, hit #22 on triple j’s Hottest 100 and has clocked up 28 million Spotify streams to date. Following the Platinum-selling success of ‘To Be Free’ and ‘Next To You’ (featuring Savoi), L D R U was handpicked to support The Chainsmokers on their Australian stadium tour and blew up in the US, supporting NGHTMRE & Slander on the road and playing at the likes of HARD LA, Splash House and Electric Forest. He’s also ticked off every major festival at home, including Stereosonic, Field Day, Splendour In The Grass, Listen Out, Falls Festival and Future Music Festival.
Fast forward to 2022 and Drew is beaming about the future. “Everything is really starting to line up, and I can’t wait to share all the new music with the world, he says.
SNBRN has become one of dance music’s most compelling new voices. The LA-based producer, real name Kevin Chapman, has mastered the art of the anthemic house hit, as evidenced by blockbuster singles like “Gangsta Walk,” “Raindrops,” and “Beat The Sunrise.” It’s no coincidence the producer has already racked up official releases on Atlantic, Astralwerks, Spinnin’, Ultra, Republic and Sony. Simply put, his sound is infectious.
SNBRN began in 2014 as a response to the increasing lack of innovation in dance music culture. While the project initially served as a recreational outlet for Chapman’s experimentation, it soon became abundantly clear that he was onto something special.
After garnering multiple Hype Machine #1’s with his first remixes, SNBRN caught the attention of Ultra Music, who signed the budding producer in late 2014. Chapman’s first single for the label, “Raindrops,” arrived in early 2015 to widespread acclaim, receiving major radio support across the US.
Chapman followed up in late 2015 with the equally infectious “Beat The Sunrise,” cementing his crossover appeal. Featuring vocalist/guitarist Andrew Watt, the song showcased SNBRN’s unique ability to integrate indie dance elements with euphoric, underground-leaning house production.
In 2016, SNBRN debuted his biggest single yet, “Gangsta Walk.” Utilizing a previously unreleased Nate Dogg acapella, Chapman paid homage to the late rap legend with one of the
standout crossover dance jams of the year. The song would go on to reach double platinum status in several territories, cementing SNBRN’s name as a veritable hitmaker within the scene.
With his music charting across North America, Chapman turned to the performance realm, making notable appearances at both Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival in 2016. In 2017, SNBRN reached his biggest milestone yet, performing at Coachella in the behemoth Sahara Tent. Having attended the Indio festival since the age of 17, the performance marked something of a full circle moment for Chapman, while further reaffirming the potential of the project.
Now SNBRN has found himself at the forefront of a burgeoning house and indie dance scene. With over 80 million streams on Spotify and counting, the producer is perfectly poised to continue his ascension of the the dance music world.
With new collaborations alongside budding artists like Blu J and Strange Club, and a high-energy live show that continues to attract new fans, SNBRN has certainly found his groove and won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
